Lone Star

The Lone Star appears throughout the state capitol in Austin, Texas. On the wooden seats, the gates, and the monuments dotting the landscape. It appears at the pinnacle of the dome in the center of the building, and is reflected in the floor at bottom. It’s a subtle reminder of the Lone Star state, without having the Texan flag waving throughout the building.

Katrina Triptych

Shown below: the “Katrina Tryptych” found in Mi Casa on South College Street in Austin, TX.

All panels are painted over silkscreens of the headlines from the tragedy.

Left panel: the weather pattern.

Center panel: Creole woman holding lilies, against the backdrop of a ruined New Orleans.

Right panel: New Orleans jazz funeral, with water flowing out of the frame and uniting all the panels.

The painted triptych was created by Channe Felton; posters are available though I can’t find ordering info online. If you find yourself on South College Street, swing in and take a look at this interesting shop.

My uncle Jeff Weaver just launched his new web site, to showcase his art.

From his Artist’s Statement:

My paintings and drawings of Gloucester reflect my long connection to, and fascination with, this unique place. Its architectural diversity, decaying wharves, and working waterfront have provided me with an intriguing array of subject matter for almost 40 years.

I choose my subjects as often from the commonplace as from the inherently picturesque, looking for that which reveals the city’s true personality. I enjoy the challenge of finding visual interest in scenes which ordinarily go unnoticed.

Notre Dame law school expansion

A recent visit to Notre Dame reveals a lot of construction next to DeBartolo Hall.

Google reveals that there’s a whole site devoted to ND architecture.

It reveals that this giant hole in the campus is a massive addition to the law school:

The new addition to the existing Law School will be located directly south of the existing building on a site once occupied by the campus post office.

The addition will be three stories plus a partial basement totaling 85,500 square feet. The materials and overall design compliment the original Law School building.
