While driving back home tonight, I swung by Kelly’s roast beef to get some drive-through dinner. Fish sandwich and side of fried clams: $21.50.  As I pulled up to the line, the car in front of me drove away in a clear “my life is too important to wait more than 5 minutes for a giant roast beef” kind of huff.
So eventually I pulled up to the window, and paid via credit card. Our conversation went like this:
CASHIER: That’ll be $7.01.
ME: That cheap?
CASHIER: Yeah, for root beer and a roast beef?
ME (now craving root beer at the mention of the tasty drink): No, fish sandwich and side of clams.
CASHIER: Oh – that’s a mistake. Did somebody int he line drive off?
ME (still craving root beer): Yeah.
CASHIER: Aw, I hate it when that happens. Okay, I’ll just charge you the difference for your meal. Got to do some math here…
[mad calculations, as we hand my credit card back and forth]
CASHIER: Okay, here’s the extra charge. Hey, want a free root beer?
ME: Sure!
So I drove off with my original meal and the free root beer which I had suddenly started to crave.
And as I drove off I said a little “thank you” to God for having my back in relation to root beer, and giving me what I wanted before I even had a chance to regret not asking for it. And I felt a response, like “I’ve got your back, now and at all times.” A small little thing, but it felt nice to have that little sense of peace.
Root beer never tasted so good.
