Adding cameraphone feed to WordPress

March 24, 2006

Today (tonight, really) I decided to set up a way to send cameraphone pics to this blog. WordPress apparently doesn’t let you send photos directly to the blog, but they do have a bunch of cool plug-ins, including one that lets you display Flickr photos on your blog.

I went ahead and signed up for Flickr. I saw that you can send pics directly from your cameraphone to Flickr, but only if you have a selected phone. I have a Verizon Wireless LG phone, which isn’t on the list, but I also saw that you could upload photos to Flicker via e-mail.

I also have a Gmail account, which lets me set up autoforwarding to any other e-mail address.  I logged into Gmail, set up a filter to auto-forward messages that came from my Verizon phone (e.g. 6135551234@vzwpix.com) to the e-mail address specified by Flickr (e.g. cool88photo@photo.flickr.com).  I also set up a contact named “aaaaa Blog” on my phone, so that I could send cameraphone pics with a minimum of finger clicks.

I tested the whole thing out by taking a picture with my cameraphone and sending it along.  Voila!  You can check out the results at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jobriga/ - originally I just took the photo, but then added a Subject and Text on my phone.

Next step is to add the Flickr feed to my blog, but that’s probably tomorrow’s blog post.
